LISD Academic Advocates
Minutes for August 29, 2005
1. Call to Order and Pledge.
The meeting was called to order at 7:03 p.m. At that time the Pledge of Allegiance was recited.
2. Minutes. The minutes were read from the May 11, 2005. On number 8 Election of officers "Karen Tarnow" needed to be changed to Karen Tarlow. Chris Cavalli moved to accept the minutes with the one change. Chris Kay 2nd the motion.
3. Treasurer's report. The beginning balance was $1,454.26. $2,000.00 was deposited from OneOAK Foundation for scholarships. No checks have been written for scholarships as of this date. The ending balance was $3,454.26.
4. Correspondence. Chris Cavalli wanted to know if there have been any written reports from teachers who have received scholarships. Mike Johnson wrote up some information about his project which was shared at a meeting last year, but it has not been posted to the website.
5. Committee. No reports from any committees except from the membership committee. Applications for membership were passed around at that time.
6. Speaker. Bill Britcher of the LISD Community Relations came to talk to us about the Leadership LISD committee. He said that this is the only Academic Booster Club in the state.
LISD staff have invited 40-50 community members to participate in the Leadership LISD program. They will meet the first Wednesday morning of each month to discuss/learn about aspects of the district such as school financing, IB program, child nutrition and attendance boundary setting.
Anyone can sign up for the "Leander ISD Insider". Through e-mail, one can find out about academics and advanced programs, athletics, each individual school, board of trustee and district news and more. This has been open for 6-8 days and they already have 400 people that have signed up. This is a good way to contact parents quickly with certain issues. You can find this on the Leander ISD website - www.leanderisd.org. From here, go to the News & Publications. The announcement was posted September 1 and includes the link for signing up.
People can write questions to this site. The questions will be sent onto a department or an area that can answer it. A notification is sent that the question has been received and a tracking number is assigned. The question should be answered in couple of days. This site is to provide information. Half the parents that are in the district now were not here 5 years ago.
7. Brainstorming. In Oct., we will be having one of the CPMS science teachers to talk with us. This teacher is one of the top teachers in the state.
We discussed possibly having Bill Britcher back in April or May. At that time he would tell us what they have accomplished with the Leadership LISD program at that point.
8. The meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Marilyn Hosier
Secretary
